Overview
A chemical producer monitored gas risk with handheld detectors on scheduled rounds. Between rounds the picture was blank, and readings recorded on paper could not be trended or reconciled at audit.
The site handles flammable solvents and receives occasional odour complaints from neighbouring properties, so continuous, defensible monitoring data matters as much as the alarm itself.
Challenges
Round-based coverage
Between inspection rounds there was no continuous reading of gas concentration.
Paper records
Handwritten logs could not be trended and were difficult to defend during audit.
Slow escalation
An alarm raised in the field did not reliably reach the control room in time to act.
Solution
Hazardous-gas electronic tags were mounted at fixed points across the six process buildings, with additional temperature and humidity tags in the two storage areas where heat build-up drives vapour pressure.
Every tag reports on a fixed interval to the monitoring platform. The EHS team sees the whole site on one screen and can trend any point back over time.
A reading above threshold triggers an instant sound-and-light alarm at the point of detection and a simultaneous alert to the control room, so the area can be evacuated and the source isolated without waiting for a round.
All readings, alarms and acknowledgements are stored with timestamps, giving a complete record for internal audit and regulatory inspection.
