Overview
A manufacturer of site logistics equipment wanted to add real-time location to its own platform, but had no interest in building, certifying and maintaining a positioning hardware line of its own.
The requirement was to source readers and gateways that could be driven entirely by the OEM’s software, with stable firmware, documented interfaces and ODM/OEM support over a multi-year product cycle.
Challenges
No hardware capability
Building a positioning line from scratch would take years and distract from the core product.
Software ownership
The OEM’s platform had to remain the single user interface; hardware had to be invisible to the end customer.
Multi-region compliance
Units ship to sites in several regions, each with its own certification and documentation requirements.
Solution
Card-reading base stations and network readers were specified as the location infrastructure, with a USB interface module used where a site has no practical network path to the host platform.
Integration runs through an open API and documented data formats, so positions, alarm events and device health land directly in the OEM’s database and are rendered by the OEM’s own interface.
Firmware is held on a controlled release track agreed between the two parties, so field units are not updated without the OEM’s sign-off.
The ODM/OEM programme covers branding, enclosure marking, documentation and long-term supply, giving the OEM a positioning capability it can sell under its own name without owning a hardware programme.
